Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that Colorado Avalanche goaltending prospect Spencer Martin of the Mississauga Steelheads is the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week posting a 3-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory along with a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .969 for the week ending November 3.
A nominee for this award last week, Martin made 94 saves in three games backstopping the Steelheads to three victories and into first place in the OHL’s Central Division standings with 21 points. His week began with a 39-save performance last Wednesday night earning first star honours with his second shutout of the season and of his career blanking the Belleville Bulls by a 3-0 score. On Friday night he made 29 saves earning second star honours in a 4-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers before making 26 saves as part of a 4-1 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday.
Martin, an 18-year-old from Oakville, ON, is playing in his third OHL season with the Steelheads. Originally selected by the club in the first round of the 2011 OHL Priority Selection, Martin was chosen by the Avalanche in the third round of the 2013 NHL Draft. In 17 games this season he carries a record of 10-6-1-0 with two shutouts along with a goals-against-average of 3.04 and save percentage of .917 while leading the league with 555 saves.
Also considered for the award this week was Dawson MacAuley of the Regina Pats who posted a 2-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory in three appearances posting a goals-against-average of 0.48 and save percentage of .983, while QMJHL rookie Chase Merchant earned two wins for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles with a goals-against-average of 1.50 and save percentage of .940.
