North Division Game(s) of the Week Review:
Aurora Tigers 3 - 1 Stouffville Spirit - Thursday November 21, 2013
Lindsay Muskies 0 - 5 Aurora Tigers - Sunday November 24, 2013
For this week, I suggested two game of the week possibilities and for the review we will look back at the Thursday night tilt between the Tigers and the Spirit. Because my week has been filled with everything but sleep, I’d like to call upon my friends from the OJHL.com to help out with my review:
With Files from OJHL.com
The Aurora Tigers, who led by three goals at one point, survived a comeback attempt by Aurora and clinched a 3-1 victory.
The Tigers led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Aurora's Dylan Sikura's scored at 18:31 in the first period to put the Tigers up 3-0.
Aurora's Kevin Entmaa was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 30 saves and let only one puck past him. Entmaa certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.54 entering the contest. Tim Bester recorded 26 saves for the Spirit.
The Tigers were paced by Michael Laidley, who registered one goal. Laidley scored on the power play 17:40 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Aurora. Aurora had gotten the advantage when the Stouffville Spirit's Matthew Heffernan was sent off for high sticking. Eric Williams assisted on the tally.
Aurora also got points from Sikura, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Tyler Boston also scored for Aurora. More assists for Aurora came via Taylor McCloy, Drake Board, and Jake Gilmour, who each chipped in one.
Stouffville could not produce up to it normal offensive output. The Spirit average 3.3 goals per game. Stouffville's offense rang up 31 shots on the Tigers' net.
The Spirit were led by Peyton Backus, who scored the team's only goal. Backus scored on the power play 12:04 into the second period to make the score 3-1 Aurora. Stouffville earned a power play opportunity when Board was put in the box for roughing. Heffernan picked up the assist.
North Division 3 Stars:
3. Shaquille Hickey - Newmarket Hurricanes
- Hickey had 3 assists in a big win for Newmarket over the Jr. Canadians last week. The win helped the Hurricanes stay ahead of the surging Panthers in the North Division
2. Brodie Tutton - Pickering Panthers
- Tutton collected 2 assists in the Panthers SO win over Hamilton on Friday night. Those 2 points extended Brodie’s point streak to 8 games (4G, 11A) but it would be snapped the next night in Orangeville.
1. Matthew Hefferman - Stouffville Spirit
- 2 goals and an assist in 3 games helped the Spirit get back on track on a season that so far has not been to kind to the Spirit.
North Division Rookie of the Week: Drake Board - Aurora Tigers
- The Barrie ON native had 1 goal and 2 assists in the Tigers 2 - 0 week with both victories coming over division opponents
North Division Team of the Week: Pickering Panthers
Last week the Panthers shared team of the week honours, but this time they get all the glory. After a tough October, the Panthers have turned things around in November and are hanging on to the last spot in the NorthEast Conference playoff standings. In the midst of a 3 game winning streak, the Panthers find themselves only one point behind Newmarket for 2nd in the North, a spot they looked like they were going to fall behind on early in the season.
North Division Game of the Week: Lindsay Muskies at Newmarket Hurricanes - Sunday Dec 1, 2013, 2:30pm EST
Another North Division matchup this week, and it could be a big one for the Hurricanes. With Pickering and Aurora matched up against teams from the very competitive East and South Divisions the Hurricanes have a chance to catch up and pull ahead at the same time this weekend. Lindsay meanwhile needs to get something before their season begins to slip away from them.
