It’s Monday and that means it’s time to take a look back at last week’s Ontario Hockey League games and name our three stars eligible for the 2014 National Hockey League Draft.
1st Star – Aaron Ekblad – Barrie Colts: Ekblad has an OHL career week last week scoring 4 times and adding 2 assists in two games. The number one ranked defenseman for the NHL Draft came within a goal of tying a 31 year OHL record. On Thursday he got an assist in Barrie’s 6-5 loss to the Erie Otters. But on Saturday he exploded for 4 goals (2 powerplay, 1 shorthanded and 1 even strength) and added an assist to finish the night with 5 points. The record of 5 goals by a defenseman in a single game was set by Allan MacInnis of the Kitchener Rangers back in March 1983. Ekblad was named the first star of the game.
2nd Star – Eric Cornel – Peterborough Petes: Cornel scored 3 goals and added 3 assists in 2 games for the Petes last week. On Thursday he scored once in the Petes 5-4 loss to the Belleville Bulls. But Cornel had a huge game on Saturday scoring twice and adding 3 assists in a 6-2 win over the North Bay Battalion. In 42 games on the season, Cornel now has 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points.
3rd Star – Nikolay Goldobin – Sarnia Sting: Goldobin continues his scoring prowess last week scoring 3 goals and 4 assists in 3 games. He scored once and added one in the shootout in a 3-2 loss to the Soo Greyhounds on Wednesday. On Friday he added another goal in regulation and another in the shootout as well as an assist in a 4-3 win over Plymouth. On Saturday he notched a goal and 3 assists in a 6-3 victory over Owen Sound. Goldobin is now on a 22 game point streak and has been in on 48.7% of the Stings offense.
