Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that 2014 NHL Draft prospect Sam Bennett of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending March 2 after recording six points in three games including four goals and two assists with a plus-minus rating of plus-3.
Bennett helped the Frontenacs earn five of a possible six points last week to hold onto the third playoff seed in the OHL’s Eastern Conference with 73 points. He opened the week with a four-point performance including his second hat-trick of the season plus an assist earning first star honours in a 10-2 win over the Belleville Bulls on Friday as part of the club’s Military Family Appreciation Game where the Frontenacs wore special CADPAT Camo jerseys. On Saturday night the Frontenacs travelled to Belleville and picked up a 5-2 win over the Bulls with Bennett scoring his 36th goal of the season before picking up an assist on Sunday despite a 3-2 shootout loss on the road against the first place Oshawa Generals.
Bennett, a 17-year-old from Holland Landing, ON, is playing in his second OHL season with the Frontenacs who selected him ninth overall in the 2012 OHL Priority Selection. Eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft, Bennett topped the Midterm Rankings released by NHL Central Scouting in January and is currently third in OHL scoring with 90 points in 55 games powered by an OHL-best 25-game point streak between November 8 and January 26 this season.
Also considered for the award this week was Zack Mitchell of the Guelph Storm who scored three goals and four assists for seven points in four games, and Jordan Maletta of the Niagara IceDogs who scored twice with four assists for six points in three games. In goal, Alex Nedeljkovic of the Plymouth Whalers posted a 2-0-0-1 record with a shutout victory along with a goals-against-average of 0.97 and save percentage of .973.
