The World Junior Championships are in full swing and while a few of the Ontario Hockey League’s draft eligible players are in Ufa Russia participating, others are getting a chance to shine thanks to their teammates participating.

1st Star – Kerby Rychel – Windsor Spitfires: It was a good week for Rychel – not so good for his Windsor Spitfires – a theme that happens quite often. In two games, Rychel scored 3 goals and added two assists. It began with two goals and an assist in a 9-4 thrashing at the hands of the London Knights. That was followed by another goal and another assist in an 8-3 beating by the Saginaw Spirit. Not two games to be particularly proud of, but Rychel was the lone bright spot for the Spitfires.

2nd Star – Jimmy Lodge – Saginaw Spirit: Lodge stepped up with one goal and 3 assists for the Saginaw Spirit last week. Although he was pointless in a 4-2 loss to Plymouth, he racked up the points versus the Spitfires and earned the games second star honors.

3rd Star = Charlie Graham – Belleville Bulls: Graham is one of those guys benefiting from having a teammate, Malcolm Subban, away at the World Juniors and so far he hasn’t disappointed. He won both of his starts. The first was a 6-3 win over the Guelph Storm where he stopped 34 of 37 shots. The second was a 3-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers where he stopped 34 of 36 shots and was particularly solid in the third stopping 13 of 14 as Kitchener tried to even the score.
