Colts’ Andreas Athanasiou Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Detroit Red Wings prospect Andreas Athanasiou of the Barrie Colts is the OHL Player of the Week for the week ending February 16 after leading the league with eight points in four games scoring six goals with two assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-4.
Athanasiou earns the award for the second time this season after setting a pair of franchise records with five goals and two assists in a seven-point performance Thursday night against the Niagara IceDogs. Athanasiou was named first star of the 9-2 victory becoming the first player in Colts’ history to score five goals in a game, surpassing the club’s previous record of four that he matched twice this season. He also became the first Colt to record seven points in a game surpassing the previous record of six points shared by Sheldon Keefe (January 7, 2000), and Steven Beyers (December 28, 2010). Athanasiou was held off the scoresheet last Monday in a 3-1 win over the Owen Sound Attack and Friday in a 3-1 loss to the Erie Otters, but finished the week by scoring his 41st goal of the season on Saturday as second star of a 2-1 win over the Peterborough Petes.
Athanasiou, a 19-year-old from Woodbridge, ON, is playing in his fourth OHL season and second with the Colts. A fourth round pick of the Red Wings in the 2012 NHL Draft, Athanasiou is currently tied for fourth in OHL scoring with a career-high 80 points in 53 games played.
Also considered for the award this week was Matt Rupert of the London Knights and Scott Laughton of the Oshawa Generals who each scored three goals and two assists for five points in two games. In goal, Jordan DeKort of the Kitchener Rangers went 1-0-1-0 with a shutout victory posting a goals-against-average of 0.97 and save percentage of .964.
